Simply FinOps

What is FinOps

FinOps is a cultural practice. In simple terms finops is combination of Finance and DevOps. Under the finance, we can get business and management. Also devops engineers work closely with the businesss to understand the exisitng cloud cost, budget and optimizing phases.

FinOps was born out of the need to establish and share best practices around managing costs related to cloud usage. First of all finops team understand 2 main points regarding the organiztation.

Understanding cloud usage

What is the cloud budget

After that, finops team has another critical point, that is cloud cost optimization. So they basically come with the best practices. Then team members will follow that plan to reduce the cloud cost and also reach the organization goals.

Thereafter it should be documented and reported by the finops team and finally forecasting phase. In forecasting phase they will help to management of organization for forecasting the future cloud budget.

Why FinOps

As per the above, FinOps is a way for teams in a company to work together to manage and control cloud spending. It helps make sure money spent on cloud services is used wisely by giving everyone clear information about costs and encouraging smarter decisions. This keeps cloud costs in check while supporting business growth and flexibility.

FinOps Principles

There are some few principles in finops. Now see how these form successful backcone of cloud financial management.

Collaboration

Cross functional teams work together continuously to manage cloud costs and improve efficiency.

Business value drives technology decisions

Cloud investments should be optimized not just for cost savings but for maximizing business value, balancing quality, speed, and innovation against spend.

Everyone takes ownership for their technology usage

Individuals and teams are accountable for the cloud resources they provision and use. This decentralizes cost responsibility.

FionOps data should be accessible, timely and accurate

Cost and usage data must be provided quickly and clearly to all relevant stakeholders to enable informed, data driven decision making and rapid responses to anomalies.

FionOps should be enabled centraly

A central FinOps team governs policies, tooling, and financial negotiations while allowing decentralized execution by teams.

Take Advantage of the Variable Cost Model of the Cloud

Cloud’s pay-as-you-go model should be actively managed through continuous right-sizing, automation, and adjustments to align costs dynamically with actual usage and demand.

FinOps Life Cycle

It provides a structured, ongoing process for organizations to achieve effective cloud financial management. It consists of three key phases

1.Inform

2.Optimize

3.Operate

FinOps Life Cycle

Inform Phase

which organizations continually cycle through to improve cost efficiency, accountability, and business value.

Inform Phase

During the Inform Phase, we’re looking to see:

  • Organizations identify data sources for technology cost, usage, and efficiency
  • Businesses and FinOps Practitioners use data for allocation, analysis, and reporting to empower teams to develop competence in budgeting, forecasting trends, building KPIs for benchmarking, and developing metrics to show the value of the organization’s technology spend.

Capabilities

  • Understand Usage & Cost
  • Quantify Business Value
  • Manage the FinOps Practice

In This phase rrovides all stakeholders with the insights necessary to make informed decisions and identify areas for improvement. This phase lays the foundation for effective optimization.

Optimize Phase

This Phase is also about collaboration across teams to optimize visibility, reporting, and management processes for areas where unit metrics indicate cloud performance is not aligned with the organization’s cloud value goals.

Optimize Phase

During the Optimize Phase, we’re looking to see:

  • Organizations better understand usage and begin to improve usage
  • Practitioners collaborate with Personas to analyze KPIs and set goals
  • FinOps teams improve rates by evaluating centralized commitment-based discount options
  • Teams receive visibility into underutilized services.

Operate Phase

The Operate phase is the final and ongoing stage in the FinOps lifecycle, where organizations embed cloud financial management into their day to day operations and continuously align cloud spending with business objectives. In this phase, teams focus on,

  • Defining, tracking, and monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) and governance policies that ensure cloud costs remain controlled while supporting business agility, speed, and quality.
  • Maintaining continuous evaluation and improvement of cloud cost management strategies, adapting to changing organizational needs, market conditions, and technological developments.
  • Institutionalizing a culture of cost accountability and collaboration across engineering, finance, and business teams, often supported by a Cloud Cost Center of Excellence or cross functional FinOps team.
  • Establishing governance frameworks and compliance monitoring to enforce policies, automate cost controls, and empower individuals with training, guidelines, and tools.
  • Regularly communicating and reporting the operational and financial impact of cloud usage to stakeholders to maintain transparency and drive informed decisions.

FinOps Maturity Model

FinOps Maturity Model

This is a practical framework that helps organizations assess, structure, and advance their cloud financial management capabilities.

It is central to the discipline and describes how practices, processes, and teams evolve in complexity and effectiveness over time.

The model most commonly follows the Crawl, Walk, Run approach.

Crawl Stage

Basically it focus on basic visibility and foundation.

Characteristics

- Initial cost tracking and simple reporting

- Basic tagging

- Manual cost allocation

- Reactive cost management

Walk Stage

Proactive Optimization

Characteristics

- Improved cost allocation and reporting

- Regular optimization and reviews

- Use of governance policies and tagging standards

- Some automation and proactive cost controls

Run Stage

Automation & Continuous Improvement

Characteristics

- Automated optimization and remediation

- Sophisticated forecasting and budgeting

- Integration with DevOps workflows

- Continuous monitoring and process refinement

How the model works

This is a practical framework that helps organizations assess, structure, and advance their cloud financial management capabilities.

It is central to the discipline and describes how practices, processes, and teams evolve in complexity and effectiveness over time.

The model most commonly follows the Crawl, Walk, Run approach.

Iterative Approach

Progression is not strictly linear across all domains. Different FinOps capabilities may mature at different rates depending on business needs and complexity.

Appropriateness Over Perfection

The goal is not to achieve “Run” or “Fly” across all areas but to ensure each capability operates at the right level for your organization’s needs and scope.

Assessment

Organizations periodically assess their current state using the maturity model to identify strengths, gaps, and set priorities for improvement.

Continuous Re-evaluation

As business needs, cloud complexity, or scale change, teams re-assess their maturity levels and shift focus as required.
Crawl, Walk, Run

Why Maturity Matters

  • Guidance and Prioritization: Helps teams know where to focus next to drive the biggest business impact.
  • Expectation Setting: Communicates clearly to stakeholders what to expect at each stage of cloud financial management evolution.
  • Scalable Progress: Supports incremental improvements, giving organizations flexibility to adapt as their cloud journey grows more complex.

FinOps is about making cloud spending understandable and manageable for everyone in the organization.

By working together, tracking costs closely, and making informed choices, teams can keep cloud expenses under control and ensure every investment boosts business success.

Embracing FinOps leads to greater confidence and value as you grow with the cloud.
